Denmark Warns Trump’s Greenland Takeover Plans Unchanged

(MENAFN) Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen issued a stark warning Saturday that President Donald Trump continues to harbor genuine ambitions of seizing Greenland, even after moderating his public statements on potential military action against the Arctic territory.

The resource-laden autonomous region has become a focal point of Trump's territorial aspirations, with the U.S. leader consistently advocating for acquisition based on strategic positioning and purported security concerns linked to Russia and China—assertions flatly rejected by Copenhagen, Moscow, and Beijing. While Trump previously left military options on the table, he reached a preliminary agreement last month with NATO chief Mark Rutte.

Addressing delegates at the Munich Security Conference, Frederiksen declared the situation deeply troubling, characterizing ongoing pressure as "unacceptable."

"Unfortunately, the US president remains very serious," she stated, noting that "the people of Greenland have never been threatened by anyone before."

Denmark has signaled openness to negotiations regarding enhanced American military deployment, yet Frederiksen emphasized critical boundaries exist. She insisted "there are, of course, things that you cannot compromise on"—specifically sovereignty and territorial borders.

"We now have a working group. We will try to see if we can find a solution… we will do whatever we can, but of course, there are red lines that will not be crossed," Frederiksen told reporters after Friday's 45-minute closed-door session with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. No readout of the discussion has been released.

Greenland's leader Jens-Frederik Nielsen shared the alarm, denouncing it as "outrageous" that his people face intimidation from a fellow NATO ally.

Last month, Frederiksen cautioned the annexation campaign risks destabilizing "everything," including the transatlantic defense alliance itself. French President Emmanuel Macron amplified the criticism, branding the "Greenland moment" proof that Trump's administration operates as "openly anti-European."
