Trump Appoints Jeff Landry as U.S. Envoy to Greenland
Landry, who entered his gubernatorial position last year, "understands how essential Greenland is to our National Security," Trump declared via Truth Social Sunday. The Republican official confirmed his new unpaid assignment won't interfere with state responsibilities. He will work "to make Greenland a part of the US," Landry posted on X.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen condemned the development as coming "out of nowhere" and deemed it "completely unacceptable," per comments reported by a channel. His ministry will summon the US ambassador in Copenhagen to demand explanations, he stated.
Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen insisted the US move "doesn't change anything for us at home" and the island still belongs to its people.
Trump's pursuit of acquiring Greenland from Denmark originated during his initial presidency but has resurfaced prominently in his diplomatic messaging since reclaiming the White House this January. He hasn't dismissed territorial annexation as an option.
The US has sustained military operations on the geopolitically vital island since World War II. Vice President J.D. Vance toured the US Space Force installation on Greenland's northwest coastline in March. He emphasized that while the US wasn't positioned to employ armed force for territorial seizure, Washington remained receptive to inhabitants exercising self-determination rights and severing ties with Denmark.
