EU Hails U.S. Sanctions on Top Russian Oil Producers
“Appreciated this evening’s call with @SecScottBessent and the Treasury decision to sanction major Russian oil companies in the face of Russia’s lack of commitment to the peace process,” von der Leyen stated on the social media platform X.
She emphasized that these US sanctions, along with the upcoming EU’s 19th sanctions package against Russia, send “a clear signal from both sides of the Atlantic that we will keep up collective pressure on the aggressor.”
The US Treasury imposed fresh sanctions on Russia’s leading oil giants, Rosneft and Lukoil, citing Moscow’s “lack of serious commitment” to advancing peace in Ukraine.
According to the Treasury Department, the new restrictions target Russia’s energy sector with the goal to “degrade the Kremlin’s ability to raise revenue for its war machine” and “support its weakened economy.”
